Learning Theories: Behaviourism #Day 8

Assalamualaikum!

Dear readers,
a most-played-game had been randomly assigned to our group today by our instructor, Dr. Lihanna. There are four most-played-games by people nowadays. Guess what are the games?

FRUIT NINJA

WHERE'S MY WATER

TEMPLE RUN

ANGRY BIRD

What is the link between all the games above with our post title today? So, here is our class activity for today. We need to use behavioural principles of learning and explain why people spend a lot of time on the game that have been assigned to us. Hmph. Quite tough task we guess. At first, our group got 2nd game which is Where's My Water game. But suprisingly, none of us had ever played that game. So, our instructor asked the whole class who have had played that game to willingly exchange their game with our group. Alhamdulillah, there is one group willingly to exchange their game. Thanks guys!

So, we got 3rd game which is Temple Run game. Oh sadly, same as before. We never play that game too. Oh how innocent we are. Haha. But we try our best to explain using behavioural principles of learning of why people spend a lot of their time on this game. We try to get some overview of this game from others too so that it is easy for us to explain. Thanks again guys for helping!

**********

This game is about an explorer attempt to steal an idol from a temple. After the explorer stole the idol, the guardian or the ‘demonic monkeys’ chase the explorer. The aim of this game is to run as far as they can by avoid from any obstacles. Sometimes in order to avoid from the obstacles, the players need to jump, duck and turn left or right.

There are positive reinforcement for the players to keep playing this game such as material reinforces. As they run from the demonic monkeys, the player will collect some coins. This coin is somehow being the material reinforce for the players to keep playing this game. For each coin it has own color and value. With this will motivate the players to collect the high value of coin. The game itself also encourage players to continue play because the coin that been collected by the players can be spent in the game’s “store”. Through the store, the players were able to purchase upgrades to many types of bonuses.

There are also negative reinforcement while playing temple run game. Players will only be given one life at the beginning. While playing this game, players need to be alert and fast. Wrong turn or late jump will eventually end the game which means the players are lose. So, players may feel unsatisfied and feel like they can do much better for new game. The need to remove the feeling of unsatisfied is the negative reinforcement which increase the behavior to play this game again and again until they reach higher level.

These game also shaping players to be obsess to play it. At the first stage of this game, the task was easy and simple. Moreover the obstacles also were not very much. Somehow if the players survive to go to the next stage, the character in the game will running faster and will face lots of obstacles. This kind of element makes the players to keep going playing this game if they not have been caught by the demonic monkeys.

Last but not least, this game also includes social reinforces when the players get higher score in this game, they will feel brag to their friends. Their friends might praise them with words, and this might increase their spirit to play in order to get higher marks and get praises from their friends.
